Transforming a rooftop playground

Origin employees rolled up their sleeves to help convert a drab rooftop into a bright playground for Sydney’s youngest Indigenous students.

Jon Castley, Frank Becker and Mark Moore took up paint brushes and high-powered hoses to improve playground conditions for the children of Gawura school in Sydney’s CBD.

Gawura is an independent primary school that works to address the disparity in educational outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous children. Sitting within St Andrew's Cathedral School, it is a highly regarded 'lighthouse' model for Indigenous day-school education.

Origin's Foundation is proudly supporting the development and progression of the Gawura school model so that more Indigenous students can realise their potential.

Frank Becker found the experience rewarding and good fun.”It makes a nice change from sitting behind a desk all day," he said, "and despite the hard work, I came back to the office feeling refreshed."

Our Foundation provides Origin employees with paid volunteer leave, so they can give their time and skills to help our partners pursue their important work.

Origin people have given their time to Gawura in a number ways, including regularly helping young Indigenous students with their reading and working with Gawura to improve their website.
